Our cardiology department currently have an opportunity for a Highly Specialist Cardiac Physiologist at Leeds Hospital.

The Role

To lead the cardiac devices service within the cardiology department at Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital.

The successful candidate will perform the duties of a Highly Specialist Cardiac Physiologist (HSCP) within the sphere of cardiac rhythm management (CRM), including but not limited to; implantation and follow-up of ICD’s, CRT's, brady devices and ILR's. Additional duties will include competently performing a wide range of cardiac investigations, including analysis, interpretation and reporting of results across all areas of invasive and non-invasive cardiology.

The successful candidate will hold certification of accreditation in cardiac devices from HRUK or equivalent.

Key accountabilities:

  • To provide highly specialist, professional direction and expertise in the technical environment of device implantation and follow-up and act as a resource within the department and wider hospital, demonstrating a high level of clinical competence in the care of patients with implantable cardiac devices.

  • To act as an expert clinical role model and resource to staff in order to optimise quality of care delivery through facilitation of evidence based/best practice care to a variety of outpatients, inpatients and surgical patients within the Nuffield hospital.

  • To demonstrate use of highly advanced communication skills to support patients and families, to manage conflict promptly and effectively and to support and promote effective working relations within the multi-disciplinary team and those from wider departments within the hospital.

  • To be responsible for maintaining and developing standards of performance and competency within cardiac rhythm management, as evidenced by further training and/or qualification in the relevant specialist area.

  • To continuously monitor day-to-day service delivery, and suggest/recommend actions for improvement to the Head of Department (HOD).

  • To work alongside the HOD in ensuring safe and effective management of patients with cardiac devices, including time-appropriate follow-up and accurate documentation in accordance with BHRS guidelines, good clinical governance standards and local policies. To use specialist knowledge to adapt technique and study focus where required using the latest evidence based guidelines.

  • To ensure accurate records of activity are kept within the cardiac rhythm management team, as well as having responsibility for the maintenance of implant and follow-up records, including ensuring accurate reporting so that information can be used for audit, improvement and clinical governance purposes.

  • To ensure effective stock control through appropriate procedures, including monitoring of standing orders, maintenance and service contracts, ensuring that they best meet the needs of the service and that suppliers & manufacturers provide the best possible service quality and value. To participate in the purchase of capital equipment and capital improvements by providing specialist advice in the Cardiac Device Labs as required.

  • To ensure cardiac device related MHRA guidelines and dealt with appropriately.

  • To respond both quickly and effectively to any clinical concerns, maintaining good communication lines with the Consultants and Clinical HOD in regards to this.

  • To participate in the review of policies, procedures and protocols both departmental and hospital wide ensuring all literature relating to area of responsibility is evidence based, accurate and up to date.

  • To take responsibility for the clinical auditing of their area of specialty, identifying adverse trends and implementing positive service and clinical changes from these outcomes. To participate in Nuffield wide audit programmes.

  • To provide high quality testing and analysis using a wide range of physiological measurement techniques in other areas of invasive and non-invasive cardiac physiology, including catheter lab procedures, exercise tolerance testing and ambulatory monitoring.

  • To train others within area of clinical speciality including competency assessment, training, development and the mentoring of junior staff.

  • Business development within the areas of invasive & non-invasive cardiology and cardiac rhythm management. To include supporting current Consultant relations and confidence, encouraging Consultants to choose Nuffield for their clinics, and to promote Nuffield Cardiology services and the Nuffield brand where appropriate (i.e through GP events).

  • To promote and maintain the Quality System(s) required within the department, including medical devices management and maintenance, responding quickly and effectively to Cardiology specific MDAs/MHRAs.

  • Manage the high-value equipment used, including accurate inventories and management of equipment servicing, and the appropriate ordering of consumables required in line with local policies and the Supplies department.

  • To participate in the departmental on-call rota where applicable.

  • To contribute to the delivery of other department specific workloads.

  • To deputise for the line manager in the daily running of the department where appropriate, during periods of absence.
